I want to be a pediatrician. For a long time, that felt out of reach. But because of this scholarship, I can follow my passion ... all because I don’t have to worry about my own personal circumstances thanks to this tremendous gift.

Carlos Cruchaga, PhD, is pursuing a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of disease, which stands to improve human health.

This scholarship has given me the opportunity to go to medical school without the shadow of loans constantly pressing down, distracting me from wholly pursuing my passion. The field of orthopedics and sports medicine first drew me to medicine, and this support allows me to pursue that path with purpose.

Lilianna “Lila” Solnica-Krezel, PhD, came to Washington UniversitySchool of Medicine in 2010 as head of the Department of Developmental Biology—the first woman to hold a department head position in the School of Medicine.

Thanks to this scholarship, I’ve been able to explore fundamental, basic science research that I wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. It’s allowed me to study medicine without the constant weight of debt — without feeling boxed into one specialty. Instead, I’ve had the freedom to discover what truly excites me.

Instead of worrying about working to cover expenses, I can dedicate my time and energy to learning, serving patients and becoming the best doctor I can be.

Much of my life has been shaped by the kindness of others, and this scholarship is among the most meaningful forms of support I have received.
